We have taken another look at the recent “Movers and Shakers”. Congratulations and best wishes to all those embarking on new opportunities in 2018!

The University of Derby has hired two new Pro Vice-Chancellor Deans to strengthen its senior management team. Dr. Warren Manning recently joined the College of Engineering and Technology from De Montfort University where he was Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dean for the Faculty of Business and Law. Professor Keith McLay has moved to the College of Arts, Humanities and Education at the University following nearly four years as Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Dr. Chris Twine has been appointed as new Academic Registrar at the University of Warwick. He will join Warwick from the University of Wolverhampton in March 2018.

The University of Bristol has appointed Professor Jeremy Tavaré, a Biochemist and the current Director of Research (Health & Life Sciences) at the University of Bristol to lead the new Faculty of Life Sciences. He will take up the role of Dean on 1 August 2018.

Professor Chris Greer has been appointed as Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences at City, University of London. He joined City’s Department of Sociology in 2005 and became Head of the Department in 2014. He continued in this role until September 2017, when he became Interim Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences.

Professor Aletta Norval joins Anglia Ruskin University as Deputy Vice-Chancellor from the University of Essex. She will be taking responsibility for education and student experience at the university. Professor Norval is originally from South Africa and gained BA, BA Hons and MA degrees in Politics from the University of Johannesburg.

The University of Greenwich has appointed Jeremy Williams to the position of Faculty Operating Officer at the Faculty of Education and Health. He will join the university on from King’s College London, Dental Institute where he was Director of Administration on 7 August 2018.

Professor Colin Grant, Vice-President (International) at the University of Southampton and Chair of the Russell Group International Forum is to join Queen Mary University of London as its new Vice-Principal (International). He will take up the post on 16 April 2018.

Andrew Rhodes, Director General, Operations at the Department for Work and Pensions has been appointed as new Registrar and Chief Operating Officer at Swansea University. In the absence of the Vice-Chancellor, he will be responsible for the efficient and effective functioning of the University.

The University of Suffolk has announced Professor Helen Langton will succeed Richard Lister OBE as vice-chancellor in June 2018. Professor Langton is currently deputy vice-chancellor with specific responsibility for academic, research and business engagement at the University of South Wales (USW).

The University of Oxford has announced the appointment of Professor Sir Charles Godfray CBE FRS as the next Director of the Oxford Martin School.  Sir Charles is a world-leading population biologist whose work spans ecology, evolution, and epidemiology.  He holds a number of leadership positions across the research and policy arenas and will take up the post on 1st February 2018.

Keele University has appointed Professor Helen O’Sullivan as Pro Vice-Chancellor of Education. Professor O’Sullivan started her new role in January and joined from the University of Liverpool, where she was Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Online Learning) and Professor of Medical Education.

Jackie Mathers has been appointed as Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor at CU Coventry, part of the Coventry University Group.

Sheffield Hallam University has named Professor Alison Metcalfe the new Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean for the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing. Professor Metcalfe will join Sheffield Hallam on 1 April from King’s College London, where she is Professor of Health Care Research.

Ruth Connor, chief executive of Marketing Lancashire is to leave the organisation in February. She will take on the new role of executive director of strategic marketing for the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

Ian Greer has been appointed as vice-chancellor at Queen’s University Belfast. Professor Greer is currently vice president of the University of Manchester and will replace Professor Patrick Johnson who passed away suddenly at the age of 58 in June last year.

Liz Waller, Head of Library & Archives at the University of York has been appointed as Director of Library Services and University Librarian at Durham University following a competitive recruitment process. She will take up her position in April 2018.

The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) has appointed Mike Baxter as executive director of finance.
Mike will work with UHI’s senior executive team and with colleagues across the partnership to provide strategic financial direction, harnessing financial resources and performance data to deliver UHI’s financial sustainability ambitions as articulated in the 2030 strategic plan.
